Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

Description

This course is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge to help reduce or eliminate the occupational risk of bloodborne pathogens in various healthcare settings. The goal of this course is to help you understand the risks and develop behaviours to help protect exposure to potentially infectious materials, such as blood and body fluids.

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

• Define and give examples of bloodborne pathogens.
• Describe the characteristics, symptoms, exposure routes, and treatment of specificbloodborne pathogens.
• Describe how bloodborne pathogens may be transmitted.
• Describe the Exposure Control Program.
• Describe exposure control methods and personal protective equipment.
• Discuss safety precautions and practices to reduce needlestick injuries.
• Define and describe the application of universal, and standard safety precautions.
• Describe and give examples of personal protective equipment used to protect against exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
• Describe reporting and response procedures when an exposure to bloodborne pathogens occurs.
• Discuss good housekeeping procedures emphasizing procedures for contaminated material.
• Describe training requirements and other methods to communicate the hazards of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.

Intended audience

This course is recommended for all personnel exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
